Ashford & Simpson is an American production-songwriting and recording team made up of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, and Simpson in the Bronx, New York. His family later moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he became a member of Christ Temple Baptist Church. While there, he sang with a band called Hammond Singers. Nickolas then attended and graduated from Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, before continuing his professional career where he eventually met his wife, Valerie. They met at White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem in 1964. After unsuccessful duet recording, they joined budding solo artist and former Ikettes member Joshie Jo Armstead at Scepter / Wand. Their compositions are recorded by Ronnie Milsap, Maxine Brown, as well as Shirelles and Chuck Jackson.
