Theodore Edgar McCarrick is a former American cardinal and lay bishop of the Catholic Church. Ordained in 1958, he became the Assistant Archbishop of New York Archdiocese in 1977, then the Orthodox Bishop of Metuchen Diocese, New Jersey in 1981. From 1986 to 2000, he was Archbishop. Newark. He became a cardinal in February 2001 and is the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. from 2001 to 2006. At one time, McCarrick was one of the most recognized cardinals of the United States. An extensive fundraiser, he has connections with prominent politicians and is seen as a power broker in Washington, DC. In the church, McCarrick was considered moderate or progressive. He was an advocate for progressive and active Catholics in social justice activities, but also a "Orthodox in obedience to Roman Catholic dogma", opposed to abortion and gay marriage and support for the all-male priesthood.
